ARAÑAS (ARACHNIDA, ARANEAE) DE UN HAYEDO DEL MONTSENY (CATALUÑA, ESPAÑA)
José A. Barrientos, Iratxe Uribarri & Raquel García-Sarrión

The spiders (Arachnida, Araneae) of a beech forest in the Montseny (Catalonia, Spain)
Abstract: During a complete annual cycle the spiders of a beech forest in the Montseny Natural Park were collected. Three plots were selected for it, according to a humidity gradient, and several methods, direct and indirect, were used on a fortnightly basis. Most of the 3866 spiders were collected with the pitfall traps. The faunistic data offer information about the presence of 102 species belonging to 25 families. Worthy of note are the following taxa, here recorded for the Iberian fauna for the first time: the Linyphiidae Mecopisthes nicaensis (Simon, 1884), Tapinocyba praecox (O. P.-Cambridge, 1873), Thaumatoncus indicator (Simon, 1884) and Wiehlea calcarifera (Simon, 1884), and the Theridiidae Robertus mediterraneus (Eskov, 1987) and Dipoena coracina (C.L. Koch, 1837). The relatively high abundance of some species allows us to comment upon their phenology.

Koch, 1839), Leptodrassus femineus (Simon, 1873), Micaria formicaria (Sundevall, 1831), Nomisia aussereri (L. Koch, 1872), Nomisia exornata (C.L. Koch, 1839), Trachyzelotes bardiae (Caporiacco, 1928) y Zelotes egregioides Senglet, 2011. Koch, 1836), Hogna radiata (Latreille, 1817) y Alopecosa albofasciata (Brullé, 1832).

Rupicolous spiders (Arachnida, Araneae) of the Montcau (Barcelona, Spain)

Abstract: 1.099 spiders are studied, from the highest and rocky areas of Montcau in the Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac natural park. Most of the spiders were obtained thanks to pitfall traps designed for this purpose. Samples were collected fortnightly from May 2010 to October 2011, except during the winter period. The sample is represented by 72 species belonging to 19 families, where Gnaphosidae and Zodariidae showed the widest and most abundant representation. These results are consistent with the characteristics of the land, a hard and rocky area with a very thin soil layer and scarce vegetation. In these extreme circumstances, Zodarion pseudoelegans Denis, 1933 was the dominant species, accompanied by other Zodariidae, such as Amphiledorus balnearius Jocqué & Bosmans, 2001 and Selamia reticulata (Simon, 1870), although with lower abundance. 18 species of Gnaphosidae are listed, but we highglight the most abundant: Drassodes lapidosus (Walckenaer, 1802), Haplodrassus signifer (C.L.Koch, 1839), Leptodrassus femineus (Simon, 1873), Micaria formicaria (Sundevall, 1831), Nomisia aussereri (L.Koch, 1872), Nomisia exornata (C.L.Koch, 1839), Trachyzelotes bardiae (Caporiacco, 1928) and Zelotes egregioides Senglet, 2011. Particularly striking is the richness of this group, in such a small and seemingly resource-poor environment. Gnaphosidae clearly dominate the scene in this ecosystem in the Montcau area. Also noteworthy is the huge abundance of a small Salticidae, Pseudeuophrys lanigera (Simon, 1871). Another interesting species studied in the area are Xysticus cribratus Simon, 1885 , Thanatus vulgaris Simon, 1870, Liocranum majus Simon, 1878, Agyneta rurestris (C.L. Koch, 1836), Hogna radiata (Latreilla, 1817) and Alopecosa albofasciata (Brullé, 1832). The results suggest that this small group of species constitutes the nucleus of a singular arachno-coenosis, linked to these rupicolous environments. The phenological data of the most prominent species are offered.

LE VÉRITABLE STATUT DE L’ESPÈCE CHACTAS RUBROLINEATUS SIMON, 1880 (SCORPIONES: CHACTIDAE)
Wilson R. Lourenço & Elise-Anne Leguin

Abstract: The type specimen of Chactas rubrolineatus, described by Simon in 1880, was considered lost, or at least mislaid, for long time. After several months of research in the collections of the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris, the female type specimen was located in the vial labelled RS-0778. A precise diagnosis of this species and also of several personal notes of E. Simon leads to two new conclusions: (i) Chactas rubrolineatus is a valid species and not a synonym of Chactas vanbenedenii Gervais, 1843, neither of Chactas brevicaudatus (Karsch, 1879); (ii) Chactas rubrolineatus was described by Simon from Rio Içá, which is not located in Ecuador but rather in Brazil. The presence of this species in Ecuador has yet to be proved.
Key words: Scorpiones, Chactidae, Chactas rubrolineatus, precise type locality, Rio Içá, Amazon region, Brazil.

Composition of the assemblage of weaver spiders (Araneae) in two types of forest at the Alta Vista research station, Santa Cruz (Bolivia)

Abstract: A description is given of the composition of the assemblage of weaver spiders occurring in the humid semi-deciduous forest of the Chiquitina on well-drained soils and in the hydrophilic, phreatophytic semideciduous forest of the Chiquitanía, at the Alta Vista research center (Concepción , Santa Cruz, Bolivia). In each forest direct sampling was conducted in 26 transects of 105 m with 4 subplots of 2 x 5 m. Likewise, a description is given for each type of forest of the understory visibility, light penetration, temperatura and humidity. A total of 426 specimens, belonging to 6 families and 18 genera, were recorded. In the semi-deciduous forest the genus Zygiella was the most frequent, followed by Mangora, Leucauge and Nephila, and in the humid forest the most frequent were Nephila Uloborus and Leucauge. The number of genera is correlated with the availability of light and understory visibility at a height of 60 cm, with the abundance, number of genera and families, with contrasting situations at 1.20 m and 1.60 m above the ground. The humid forest was characterized by a dense undergrowth, registering a greater abundance and richness of spiders weaving genera, with the opposite being true of the semi-deciduous forest.

José A. Barrientos & Crisanto Gómez

Microhabitat use by scorpion species (Arachnida: Scorpiones) in the montane Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil
André Felipe de Araujo Lira & Adriano Medeiros De Souza

Abstract: The increasing devastation of tropical forests makes it critical to understand the structure of their animal communities. Based on this assumption, we conducted a field study to investigate the microhabitat use of the scorpion community in a montane marsh (‘Brejo’formation). During three months, samples were actively collected during the night with the help of a UV flashlight. The distinct spatial distributions within a habitat indicated distinct niche partitioning among coexisting species of scorpions. Based on these results, we conclude that individual differences in the use of the environment can facilitate coexistence among species. Competition for shelters at different spatial scales and predation pressure can highly affect the dynamics and distribution of scorpion species in a tropical forest.

Occurrence of cannibalism in Mastigoproctus pelegrini Armas, 2000 (Thelyphonida: Thelyphonidae)
Rolando Teruel & Tomás M. Rodríguez-Cabrera

Abstract: Herein we record for the first time the occurrence of cannibalism in the Cuban endemic whipscorpion Mastigoproctus pelegrini Armas, 2000. We observed one actual case plus evidence of at least another 14, all inside a single cave in the Guanahacabibes peninsula, at the western end of Cuba. Some of these cases apparently involve intersexual cannibalism, as the killed specimens were adult males (including the first one mentioned above), but the other remains belong to adult females and juveniles.

On the highest altitudinal occurrences of scorpions in Cuba (Arachnida: Scorpiones)
Tomás M. Rodríguez-Cabrera & Rolando Teruel

Abstract: All findings of scorpions above 800 m altitude in Cuba are herein revised; this contour is seen to be exceeded only by four members of Buthidae: Centruroides anchorellus Armas, 1976, Centruroides baracoae Armas, 1976, Centruroides stockwelli Teruel, 2000, and Rhopalurus junceus (Herbst, 1800). Some of the previous records from the literature are corrected and the upper limit is found to correspond to C. baracoae in eastern Cuba (1,600 m at the source of Palma Mocha River). Also, the occurrence of C. stockwelli is documented at the highest mountain of central Cuba (1,140 m at Pico San Juan, Cienfuegos), as well as new upper records for C. anchorellus (1,362 m on the southern slope of Pico Martí) and R. junceus (1,231 m at Pico El Toldo).
